Group collaborating on product design and prototyping during an internship program.

Innovation and Product Design Internship Program

Learn. Practice. Build. Create Impact.

1. About the Program

The Internship Program on Innovation & Product Design by ENGGECT Innovation is an industry-oriented, project-based learning program designed for engineering students and fresh graduates who want practical exposure to innovation, design thinking, engineering design, product development and prototyping.

Unlike a conventional classroom program, the internship takes participants through a complete product-development journey. Interns identify a real-world problem, understand user needs, generate innovative concepts, develop engineering solutions, create CAD models and prototypes, test their ideas, and finally present their solution.

The program follows a structured learning journey:

Explore & Empathize → Define → Ideate → Design → Prototype → Validate → Present

The emphasis is on learning by doing, with mentoring from experienced industry professionals and exposure to practical engineering methods and tools.

2. Program Curriculum

ModuleKey Learning & Activities

1. Innovation & Product Development FundamentalsInnovation mindset, product development lifecycle, industry examples and identifying opportunities

2. Design Thinking & Human-Centered DesignEmpathy, user research, observation, customer needs and design-thinking methodology

3. Problem Identification & DefinitionProblem framing, root-cause analysis, Voice of Customer, requirements and “How Might We?” statements

4. Ideation & Concept DevelopmentBrainstorming, SCAMPER, concept sketching, functional thinking and alternative solution generation

5. Concept Evaluation & SelectionScreening concepts using desirability, feasibility and viability; decision matrices and concept selection

6. Engineering & Product DesignProduct architecture, mechanisms, materials, design considerations and translating concepts into engineering solutions

7. CAD & Digital Product DevelopmentIntroduction to 3D modelling, assemblies, engineering drawings and digital product definition

8. Design for Manufacturing & AssemblyDFM/DFA fundamentals, manufacturing processes, tolerances, materials and cost considerations

9. Prototyping & Model DevelopmentRapid prototyping, 3D printing, mock-ups, proof-of-concept models and prototype planning

10. Testing & ValidationTest planning, functional testing, user feedback, design verification, failure identification and iterative improvement

11. AI & Emerging Technologies in Product DesignAI-assisted ideation, research, design support, generative tools, simulation and emerging digital engineering technologies

12. Product Innovation ProjectTeams develop a complete product concept from problem identification through prototype and final presentation

Internship Project Journey

Each participant/team works on a practical project:

Real Problem → User Research → Problem Statement → Ideas → Concept Selection → Engineering Design → CAD → Prototype → Test → Improve → Final Presentation

The project becomes an important component of the participant's engineering portfolio.

3. Program Outcomes & Learnings

By completing the internship, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the end-to-end innovation and product development process.
  • Apply Design Thinking to real-world engineering problems.
  • Identify customer/user needs and convert them into meaningful product requirements.
  • Define problems using structured engineering and innovation methods.
  • Generate, evaluate and select innovative product concepts.
  • Translate creative ideas into practical engineering solutions.
  • Understand the application of 3D CAD, engineering drawings and digital design tools.
  • Apply basic material, manufacturing, DFM/DFA and tolerance considerations.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes and proof-of-concept models.
  • Develop basic testing and validation plans.
  • Use AI and emerging technologies to support innovation and product-development activities.
  • Work effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Develop technical documentation and communicate engineering decisions.
  • Present and defend a product concept through a structured design review/final presentation.
  • Build a tangible project portfolio that can support future academic, internship and employment opportunities.

What Participants Create

Rather than completing the internship with only a certificate, participants should leave with tangible evidence of their work: a defined problem statement, user-needs analysis, concept sketches, concept-selection methodology, CAD/engineering design, prototype or proof of concept, test results, project report, and final presentation.

Learning Approach

Less Teaching. More Doing.

A suitable ENGGECT learning model would be approximately 15% concept learning, 25% guided activities and case studies, 45% project/design/prototyping work, and 15% reviews, testing and presentations. This aligns particularly well with ENGGECT's practical-learning positioning.

4. Duration & Mode of Delivery

- 6 Months (~24-250 hrs)
