Academy of Tool Die & Mould Design

Designing Precision. Enabling Manufacturing Excellence.

1. About the Program

The Tool, Die & Mould Design Workshop by ENGGECT Innovation is a practical, industry-oriented program designed to develop fundamental and applied skills required for the design and development of manufacturing tools, press tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and injection moulds.

The program connects product design with manufacturing engineering, enabling participants to understand how a component progresses from a 3D product model to tooling design and finally to production.

Participants learn through engineering examples, component analysis, CAD demonstrations, design calculations, tool-layout exercises, manufacturing drawings and real-world case studies.

Part Analysis → DFM → Tool Concept → Engineering Design → 3D CAD → Validation → Manufacturing

2. Program Curriculum

Module 1 — Fundamentals of Tool Engineering

Introduction to tool, die and mould engineering; manufacturing processes; types of tooling; tool materials; production requirements; and the role of tooling in mass production.

Module 2 — Component Analysis & DFM

Study of component geometry, material, tolerances, production volume and manufacturing requirements, including Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.

Module 3 — Jigs & Fixture Design

Principles of 3-2-1 location, locating and clamping, degrees of freedom, fool-proofing, machining fixtures, assembly fixtures and inspection fixtures.

Module 4 — Press Tool & Sheet-Metal Die Design

Fundamentals of blanking, piercing, bending, forming and drawing, including:

  • Strip layout and material utilization
  • Cutting-force calculations
  • Punch and die clearance
  • Die-set construction
  • Compound and progressive dies
  • Punches, dies, stripper plates and guide systems

Module 5 — Plastic Injection Mould Design

Introduction to injection moulding and mould construction covering:

  • Core and cavity development
  • Parting-line selection
  • Draft and shrinkage
  • Sprue, runner and gating systems
  • Ejection systems
  • Cooling systems
  • Standard mould components

Module 6 — Tool Materials & Manufacturing

Selection of tool steels and materials, heat treatment, hardness, surface treatments, machining, grinding, EDM, wire EDM and CNC manufacturing considerations.

Module 7 — 3D CAD Tool Design

Practical approach to creating:

3D Components → Tool Layout → Tool Assembly → Standard Components → Manufacturing Drawings

CAD demonstrations can be aligned with commonly used engineering platforms such as CATIA, Creo, NX or SolidWorks, depending on the workshop configuration.

Module 8 — GD&T & Engineering Drawings

Application of tolerances, fits, datum systems and GD&T to tool components and manufacturing drawings.

Module 9 — Tool Design Validation

Design reviews, interference and clearance checks, tolerance considerations, strength and wear considerations, manufacturability, maintainability and tool-life improvement.

Module 10 — Industry Design Challenge

Participants analyze a selected component and develop a preliminary tool/die/mould design solution, followed by a technical presentation and design review.

3. Program Outcomes & Learnings

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of tool, die, mould, jig and fixture design.
  • Analyze components for manufacturability and tooling requirements.
  • Understand the principles of press-tool and sheet-metal die design.
  • Understand the architecture and major elements of an injection mould.
  • Apply basic locating and clamping principles in jig and fixture design.
  • Develop preliminary tool layouts and design concepts.
  • Understand the application of 3D CAD to tool design and assembly.
  • Prepare and interpret engineering and manufacturing drawings.
  • Apply basic GD&T, fits and tolerances to tooling applications.
  • Select appropriate tool materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Consider tool life, maintainability, manufacturing cost and production volume during design.
  • Participate more effectively in tool-design reviews, manufacturing discussions and problem-solving activities.
  • Translate a product component into a practical tooling concept for production.

Learning Philosophy

Understand the Part → Design the Tool → Validate the Design → Enable Production

The emphasis is on hands-on engineering activities, CAD demonstrations, calculations, industrial case studies and practical tool-design exercises, rather than theory alone.

4. Duration & Mode of Delivery

- 6 Months (~240-250 hrs)
